He married Mary Margaret Price October 21, 1943. Mary was born March 9, 1919 in Birmingham, Jefferson Co, AL. Mary was the daughter of Daniel Ray Price and Pauline Ballard. Mary died September 11, 2011 in Baton Rouge, LA. OBIT: Mary Margaret Price McCord, resident of Baton Rouge since 1962, passed away September 11, 2011. Born on March 9, 1919, she was the daughter of Daniel Ray and Pauline Ballard Price and grew up the oldest of five sisters in Birmingham, Alabama. She enjoyed many happy times at Camp Winnataska, where her father was executive director for many years. She was a graduate of Birmingham Southern College, where she met her husband of fifty-nine years, and was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. After earning her Master's Degree in microbiology from Emory University, Mary Margaret served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U. S. Navy during World War II. Her husband, Fred McCord, served as the Executive Director of the Baton Rouge YMCA for over twenty years while Mary Margaret worked as a faithful YMCA spouse as well as devoted mother of three daughters. As her children grew up, Mary Margaret took on a role as a medical technician for seventeen years at the Baton Rouge Cancer Detection Laboratory. In her later years she enjoyed her retirement spending time with grandchildren, travel, gardening, reading and needlepoint. She was also an active member of First United Methodist Church for almost fifty years and loved her friends there as well as the many treasured friendships she developed in her ten years at St. James Place. Above all she enjoyed time spent with her family and friends, and considers her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren her greatest accomplishments. Preceded in death by her husband, Fred Matthews McCord, Mary Margaret is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law: Margaret and Charles Allen of Houston, TX; Lucy and Bob Welch of Baton Rouge; and Betsy and Al Chestnut of Jackson, MS. She is also survived by her sisters and brothers-in- law including: Florence Nix of Rock Hill, South Carolina; Polly and Fred Owen, Betty Ray and Joe Hughes, and Kap and Clyde Garmon, all of Birmingham, Alabama. Mary Margaret is also survived by her eight grandchildren of whom she was so proud: Kathryn Allen Adams (Chris) Houston, TX; Rebecca Allen Garland (Mike) Houston, TX; Leslie Allen Kilbourn (Donnie) Houston, TX; Matthew Welch, Pennsylvania; Andi Lynn Welch Jacobsmeyer (Kenny) Baton Rouge; Page Chestnut Callen (Grant) Jackson, MS; Mary Hamilton Chestnut, Nashville, TN; and Ann Claridge Chestnut, Jackson, M.S. She is also survived by her nine precious great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and friends. Honorary pallbearers are Matthew Welch, Joe Hughes, Fred Owen, and Clyde Garmon. The family of Mary Margaret thanks the St. James Place staff and sends special appreciation to Sadie Simms, Trinice Simms, Charlotte Goins, Vanessa Goins, and Hospice of Baton Rouge.
