I was the first of four children, born to a loving mother and father. Both worked on a farm as sharecroppers to provide our basic needs. Times were hard in the years ahead. However, we did have clothes on our backs and food enough to satisfy our physical needs. Education was important, carried out as a need, for the children of my mother and father until 1940 when dad contacted pneumonia that later turned into pleurisy. I had to quit school half way through the ninth grade and take over the farm due to his extended illness. I did not return to school until 1946. As far back as I can remember I never cared to be a farmer, anything else but that. In 1943, I applied for an got a job in a factory in Troy, Alabama (Whaley Box Factory) manufacturing boxes for 50 caliber machine gun bullets. Worked it for several weeks before I had to go back and finish gathering peanuts so that we could satisfy our debtors. Early in 1945 I join the Navy. After doing so I was shipped out to San Diego, California for Basic Training. Completing it, I had asked for a Aircraft Carrier. I was assigned to the USS Scurry, AM234 a Minesweeper, headed for the Sea of Japan and was diverted to Galveston, Texas, to be de-commissioned and placed in Mothballs. I also helped to de-commission the USS Garland. In 1946 I anxiously received my discharged under the V-6 end of war plus 6 months obligation and returned home. After finishing High School I tried to find suitable work. I found none. Trying two jobs, one in Montecello, Fl. and the other in Tallahassee. Both had no future and were unsuitable. I joined the USAF in 1948. Was assigned to Tyndall AFB, as a Officer Classification Technician. Tyndall was then supporting the, Air University's, Air Tactical School. On June 12th 1948, I married Evelyn L. Harrison. The best decision I ever made even after 50 years of marriage. The year 1951, I was transferred to Maxwell AFB at Montgomery, Al., along with Air Tactical School. I remained at Maxwell until late 1958 where I appliedfor retraining and was transferred to Keesler AFB, Ms., for a fifty-two week, training into the Auto Tracking Radar Systems Field. After completing the school I was transferred to the 4th Radar Bomb Squadron located in Atlanta, Ga. This career field prepared me for the next step after retiring from the USAF. I applied for a Job with Honeywell Test Instruments Division, Annapolis, Md. There I worked as a Precision Measuring Instruments Technician (Instruments Calibration Lab) supporting a large Engineering crew on a Government Contract with the USN. In 1971, I was instrumental in the development of Honeywell's local Medical Equipment Repair and was transferred to McLain, Va, where I worked on Medical Equipment in local hospitals. I was contacted by Mr Fred Althaus, Anne Arundel General Hospital and asked if I would be interested in setting up a program of Biomedical Engineering for the Hospital. After interview and agreement I began working for the Anne Arundel General Hospital as a Biomedical Engineer. At a later date I was appointed Director, Biomedical Engineering, working directly under Mr Doordan, now president of Anne Arundel Medical Center. I retired in October 1989 and returned to Fla.
