"WM. SAGE SHOOTS DIVORCED WIFE AND KILLS SELF. WOMAN WILL LIVE"

William Sage, coal miner, aged 62 years, attempted to kill his former wife on Tuesday evening at her apartment over 601 South First street, and then ended his life, by shooting himself through the chest, the bullet cutting the main artery to the heart. Sage shot at his wife twice, the first time stricking her in the abdomen, the bullet traveling just underneath the skin to the right side where it lodged and was found and removed by Coroner F. A. Gillett and Dr. E. B. Wilcox. The second shot missed the woman and struck the wall in the northwest corner of the little room. A third shot was fired at himself. The bullet entered and pierced the heart, bringing instant death. A 38-caliber Ivor Johnson revolver was used by Sage and but three shells of the magazine had been fired. Sage's body was taken to the Cheeseman Funeral Home. Only the two were in the room when the shooting occurred and officers are accepting the wife's story of the affair. Mrs. Sage says that and Sage were recently divorced and that the court specified the payment of a small amount of money each month by the husband for support of the support of the 11-year-old daughter.( Note: This is Nova my grandma Verla Grace Sage's sister.) Sage put in an appearence a little before 6 o'clock with the explanation that he had come to pay her some money wasn't due yet, but Sage declared that he wanted to settle the thing and get it over with. "Alright, wait a minute and I'll get some paper and writ you a receipt," she says she told him. The paper was procured and placed on a table in the center of the room where the officers later found it. " I haven't a pencil." "Well, you don't need any for I'M going to give you what's coming to you." And with that she says Sage pulled the gun from his right coat pocket and pressed it against he abdomen. She brushed the weapon (This sentence was not on the paper but I assume it said weapon away from her.) the bullet caught her a gianem?????? She ran into the corner behind the stove, calling to the neighbors in adjoining rooms to open the bolted door between the apartments. When they ?????????(sentance mumble jumble.) failed to respond she picked up an axe and began battering at the door, splintering it, but failed to force an opening. Sage took another shot at her, and then killed himself. The frightened woman ran from the building and downstairs into the grocery where she told the Police Chief Lee Shaver, Assistant Chief John McCarty, and Officer Logue responded to the call, and these men in turn summoned Coroner F.A. Gillett and Sheriff John Whitmore. Mrs. Sage was taken to the office of Cononer Gillett where the bullet was located by X-Ray and removed by the doctor and Dr. E.B. Wilcox. The wound is not serious, the bullet entered about the middle of the abdomen and traveling to the right side just under the skin. Mrs. Sage is 49 years old. A post mortem conducted by Dr. Gillett revealed that Sage had shot himself just above the pulmonary artery leading to the lungs, the bullet piercing the artery and finally lodging in the spine, between the third and fourth ribs. The stories told by witnesses at the inquest conducted by Coroner Gillett at Cheesman Funeral Home brot out no new facts of importance. Mrs
