J. died February 3, 2005 in Broken Arrow, Tulsa Co., OK. OBIT: J. Wendell, was born April 20, 1917, near Leedey, OK, to James William Blackketter and Cora Dell Miller Blackketter. He died February 3, 2005, at the age of 87 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, his parents, 4 brothers, and 4 sisters. Mr. Blackketter, "Blackie," married Ila Nelene Fletcher on June 8, 1940. He was a graduate of Oklahoma State University with degrees In Agricultural Engineering and General Physical Science. He served in World War II in the U.S. Army, entering in June 1941 as a 2nd Lieutenant, and returning after the War as a Lt. Colonel. J.W. continued his military service in the Army Reserve, retiring as the commanding officer of the 353rd Engineering Battalion out of Oklahoma City with the rank of Colonel. Most of his civilian career was with the Soil Conservation Service of the US Agriculture Department. He retired as Supervisory Civil Engineer and Head of the Detailed Engineering Investigations section in 1977. He was a registered professional engineer and land surveyor in the state of Oklahoma. Mr. and Mrs. Blackketter retired to their KK Bar land near Meeker, OK. They enjoyed raising cattle, catfish, horses, and visits by their children, grandchildren and friends. Mr Blackketter was a deacon in the Baptist church, and the Blackketters were active in the church wherever they lived. They had a special love for mission work and working with children. For 22 years they worked together with the 5-year-old children's Sunday School class at the First Baptist Church of Shawnee, OK. He also taught more than 10 years at Oakland Chapel Baptist Church. Mr. Blackketter was a member of local American Legion Post 16. J. Wendell is survived by: his 3 children, Ila Nelene Blackketter Wolfe and husband, Darwin of Bella Vista, AR, Lehman Wendell Blackketter and wife, Gayle of Tucson, AZ, Marcia T. Blackketter Bridgewater and husband, Dennis of Broken Arrow; 9 grandchildren, Kent E. Duerksen, Jason W. Blackketter, Jessica Ann Blackketter, Jonathan L. Blackketter, Jeremy L. Blackketter, Robert E. Bridgewater, Rachel Bridgewater Bardgett, Michael S. Wolfe, and Angela M. Wolfe; 5 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, William Lawrence (Gale) Fletcher and wife, Betty, George Tyner, and Joe Gideon; and many beloved relatives and friends. At this time J. Wendell Blackketter is enjoying the blessedness of being with Jesus Christ in Heaven as busy as he can be with a huge herd of back Brangus cattle, a number of quarter horses or whatever his Lord and Savior has for him to do. Family will receive guests Tuesday, February 8, from 6-8 p.m at Gaskill Funeral Chapel. Funeral, Wednesday, February 9, 10 a.m., at Gaskill Funeral Chapel, 119 North Union, Shawnee, OK, (405) 275-0371, with interment following the service at Resthaven Memorial Park at 4901 East Highland, Shawnee, OK. The family has designated The American Legion Children's Home, 1300 Summers Place, Ponca City, OK 74604 or to the Oakland Chapel Baptist Church Children's Ministry, 915 E. Oakland, Shawnee, OK 74801 as appropriate for memorials.

He married Ila Nelene Fletcher June 8, 1940. Ila was born October 11, 1917. Ila was the daughter of Lawrence Fletcher and Jessie (___). Ila died August 24, 1994 in Meeker, Lincoln Co., OK. Ila was buried at Resthaven Memorial Park, Shawnee, Pottawatomie CO. OK
