He was a Job Setter for Delco Moraine, a Division of General Motors, retired in 1987. He attend Elkfork Community Church and accepted The Lord Jesus Christ as his savior, was batpized by his 2 sons; Melvin & Sheldon at The Charelston Road Church of Bretheren in Ohio. Also was an US Army Veteran of The Korean War.

He was preceded besides his parents by 2 brothers; Woodrow Smith & Brack Smith; 2 Sisters; Magalene Smith & Monnie Smith.

Burial followed at West Liberty Memorial Gardens, West Liberty, KY. Visitation 6:00 pm Wednesday, at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Funeral Home, West Liberty, KY.

Age 52, of Xenia, passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at Hospice of Dayton after a courageous battle with cancer. Melissa was born June 26, 1956 in Xenia to Norma Lee (Skaggs) and the late Sewell Herbert Smith. Melissa was a determined person who knew what she wanted and never gave up. At 18, she married Rick Lawson who shared her love for Harleys, automobiles and life. She was employed at Kodak where she worked as Supervisor of the Customer Contact Center. She was known as "Mother Hen" to her co-workers as Melissa enjoyed helping others. She was a vibrant & positive Christian and attended the AHOP Church in Xenia. She enjoyed boating, fishing and her Boxer dogs. She was preceded in death by her husband Rick, August 10, 1995 and her father Sewell H. Smith, July 3, 2006. Melissa is survived by her mother Norma L. Smith of West Liberty, Kentucky, 2 brothers Sheldon and his wife Shelley Smith & their children Shane & Sunny of Bellbrook, Mel and his wife Patti Smith & their children Aubre' & Curtis of Frankfort, Ohio, sister Melinda and her husband Ivan Perry & their children Melissa, Jonathan, Nancy and Robby of West Liberty, Ky, local mom and dad Marcella & Fred Keeton of Dayton, 2 aunts and 2 uncles of Kentucky, and her canine companions Tori and Otis. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am-12:00 noon, Saturday August 30 at Conner & Koch Funeral Home, 92 W. Franklin St. (S.R. 725), Bellbrook. A celebration of her life will follow at 12:00 pm noon. Pastor Mark Brooks will officiate.
