Edward died October 11, 2007 in Fernandina Beach, Nassau Co., FL. OBIT: Avid outdoorsman and forester by profession, Edward Eugene Jones, Jr. 86, of Fernandina Beach, was born on January 12, 1921 in Petersburg, VA: and at his home peacefully entered into his eternal rest on October 11, 2007. Ed was a loving husband, a devoted father of three children, grandfather of seven, and great grandfather of two. He was dearly loved by his family. He will be remembered as being quick witted and a keen observer and lover of nature. When not spending time with family, he could often be found out walking in the woods or on the golf course. During World War II, Ed served his country as a Captain in the U. S. Marine Corps and was stationed in the South Pacific. He received the Purple Heart and was awarded the Bronze Silver Star for his service. Following his service, he received a Bachelor's Degree in Forestry from Virginia Tech and a Master's Degree in Forestry from Duke University. He moved to Fernandina Beach sixty years ago to join Rayonier and raise a family,. He was always involved in and making contributions to his community. He served as City Commissioner and Mayor of Fernandina Beach from 1966 to 1972. During his career, Ed was President and Director of the Florida Forestry Association, a Director of the National Pulpwood Association and served as a board member of the Northeast Florida Regional Planning Council. He was also a Charter Member and Past President of the Fernandina Beach Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was well known in the community and the region for his professional career as the Director of the Southeast Timber Division of ITT Rayonier. Out of concern for his employees, Ed established a safety program resulting in ITT Rayonier's Safety Award for three years, including the President's Gold Award, the President's Safety Achievement Award and the President's Safety Award. He was also the personal recipient of the ITT President's Safety Award in 1980. His many accomplishments were a testament to his talents and abilities and earned him the respect of his peers in the industry. He was a quiet and thoughtful leader, always willing to serve and contribute his valuable expertise to those he served. Other than his time as mayor, he was not one to be in the spotlight of politics. He did, however, faithfully support the political career of his wife, Marilyn, during her legislative career, by offering sage advice and wise counsel. Ed is survived by his wife of 26 years, Marilyn; his sister, Nan Hodges; his daughters, Ginger Ramsdell and Barbara Parish and her husband, Robert Parish; his grandchildren, Joshua, Adam, Andrew, and his wife, Jamie, and David Ramsdell, Courtney, Sarah and Edward Parish; his great grandchildren, Christian and Lilliyana Ramsdell. He is predeceased by his daughter, Linda Jones-Dixon and his parents, Grace Algood Jones and Edward E. Jones, Sr., who are with him in heaven. He is also survived by his wife Marilyn's children, Hugh Evans, Jr. and his wife, Linda, Daniel A. Evans and his wife, Angie, Cecile Rider and her husband, Robert, and Mary Louise Raiford and her husband, Tom; and grandchildren, Davis Evans and his wife, Erin, Lindsey Evans, Andrew Evans, Ashley Evans Hilton and her husband, Stephen, Brittany Evans, Chelsea Evans, Bailey Rider, Macaulay Rider, John Raiford, Tyler Raiford and Marissa Raiford; and great grandchildren, Grace Evans and Verity Evans. Pallbearers will be Robert Parish, Robert Rider, Dan Evans, Hugh Evans, John Raiford and David Ransdell and honorary pallbearers will be Luke Morgan, Norman Alday, Hugh Stone, Jimmy Johnson and Walter Hopkins. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday at the Amelia Plantation Chapel. Graveside services will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery in Jacksonville.
