If you are like my wife and me, we have a favorite homepage. Ours is MSN. And if you are familiar with MSN you have seen the little blurbs that they post to catch your attention when you logon. Today I saw something that caught my eye, Pet Names Women Hate Most.
On a whim I clicked on it, and low and behold what did I discover? The most hated pet name was Babe. Yep, it was Babe. That’s what I call my wife most of the time. The wheels began to turn in my little head, and I wondered if she had been hating it for the last thirty-plus decades and never bothered to let me know. Then I wondered if she had even noticed I’d been calling her the most hated pet name in the world.
She was in the other room watching HGTV while I was playing on the computer, so I called out, “Tina, what nickname do I usually call you?”
“Huh?”
“Just wondering if you could tell me what I usually call you.”
“You call me Babe. Why?”
“Just wondering. Do you think it’s offensive?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“It’s the way you say it. I’m fine with Babe.”
Then she asked, “What do I usually call you?”
Without hesitating I replied, “Hey.”
“Hey?’
“Yep. Hey.”
“Do you find that offensive?”
“Not really. I’m just glad you call me.” End of conversation… she went back to HGTV and I continued surfing the net.
I guess we’ve been together long enough the things that bother the folks on MSN aren’t the same things that bother us. I’ll just keep calling her Babe, and she’ll probably keep calling me Hey.
Life goes on. I guess the pet name thing isn’t a battle worth fighting about here on the ridge.
