Throwback Thursday

I remember well the Easters of my childhood. There was a freshness of that special day celebrated with new Sunday clothes, spring flowers, and Easter baskets full of candy. There was no news of terrorist or ugly presidential campaigns. Malls did not exist and greed didn’t seem to be the order of the day. Don’t get me wrong. There were other problems. But from my perspective looking back it was and age of innocence our children and grandchildren will never know on this earth, and that saddens me. How did we get to this point?

I think we arrived here because we became distracted. Sunday night television programs distracted us. Sports distracted us. Industries pushing to become just a little bit more profitable for their stockholders distracted us. Life in general distracted us.

I’m afraid we have come to enjoy all the distractions. But for just a moment it would be interesting to go back in time to a Sunday morning during the 50s or 60s and experience those feelings once more. To feel the morning breeze coming through the windows before we had central heat or air conditioning. To hear the chickens cackle out in the yard or hear a cow calling for her calf in the pasture nearby. And to experience once more loading up in the car with our parents and siblings, heading off to church.

If we could experience that one more time would it make a difference? Would we wake up Monday morning changed, or would we be relieved that our lives were no longer like that? I’d like to think we’d be different somehow. But we’ll never know. On the other hand, it is something to think about.
