Fifty Years

There will be a gathering this weekend. It will be a celebration of an old friend’s birthday. A celebration of lives reunited after the passing of fifty years. And a tribute to someone who planted seeds that changed our lives forever. Sadly, some friends were not able to complete this journey of years. And some will not be able to go home again for one reason or another.

There’s a story I heard about a river. It says you can walk down to that river, sit by its side and enjoy a moment of beauty and peace. But tomorrow if you walk down to that same river and sit in the same spot it won’t be quite the same. The water that flowed by yesterday won’t be there today. It is gone, never to be seen again. It is only a memory.

We can’t recapture those days of our youth again, but we can gather and share memories of those special times. We can rekindle old friendships and salute the young man that came into our community for a while back in the 60s and challenged us to become more than we thought possible. Our physical appearances may have changed a tad bit. (I’ll be the dumpy bald guy with bifocals that you probably won’t recognize. The odd bird. Perhaps there will be nametags?) But I’ll bet our hearts will probably be the same. Just a little fuller. Fifty years will do that for you.

We may not be able to put time in a bottle, but I hope to see you in Louisville this weekend.

Time In A Bottle
