Life at the Helipad Hotel

I find it ironic that the room my daughter’s fiancé is in is located directly beneath the hospital’s helipad. Especially since he was life-flighted here last Friday.

There must be a lot of hurting people in the southeastern part of this country because every few minutes a helicopter zooms in and bounces onto the roof over our heads. And so it goes both day and night. day and night. The lovely scent of hydraulic fluid waifs through our room from the iceberg air conditioner that pours cold air onto my head from overhead vent. I’ve never ridden in a chopper, but I’m tempted to sneak up to the rooftop and see if they’ll let me. Nashville from the air at a low altitude would be cool, I imagine. Being on the 11th floor does have a view, but a couple hundred feet higher and flying around the city would be even better.

I really like this town. When my daughters were younger we traveled here to see Opryland. Nowadays we come to visit our oldest who lives in Gallatin or we’ll come down to the mall. I’ve driven here few times to see an old classmate who plays at The Station Inn, but I’ve never been able to catch him when he’s been in town.

I’ve learned it’s not a good idea to go for a walk around the parking garage here at the hospital. Folks think you’re going to leave and will drive along behind you believing they’ll get your parking space. I had a small parade behind me yesterday before I realized what they were doing and bolted for an exit.

For now I will just dream about flying above the city whilst the helicopters keep landing on the roof overhead. Who knows. Perhaps one of them will push that darn iceberg over the edge of the roof.
