Following The Jesus Saves Van

On the east side of Charleston, West Virginia an old van with Jesus Saves painted across its back passed us. I took it as a sign.

“Follow Jesus,” I told my wife.

“Seriously?”

“Absolutely. I have a good feeling about that van.”

It wasn’t long before traffic stalled. There must have been an accident up ahead. Still, we stayed behind Jesus Saves. It wasn’t but a few minutes before our lane began moving again. Once more we were zipping down the interstate at 80 miles an hour trying to keep up with Jesus Saves.

Evidently a lot more folks had the same feeling I did about following Jesus. People were cutting in front of us to get behind the van with Jesus Saves painted across its back!

They were moving faster and faster. Traffic was was picking up as the sun grew higher in the sky. By this time Jesus was way up ahead in front of us. I said, “Honey, just keep your eyes on Jesus. He may take us all the way across Kentucky to Paducah.”

After a while that van was just a speck on the highway far ahead of us.

About that moment a pain hit me. The coffee I had before we left the motel had finally hit rock bottom.

“Pull over at the first chance you get!”

“Seriously?”

“Very.”

A mile down the road we exited at Olive Hill. The first station we pulled into had its restrooms locked. Rats!

We flew down the road and screeched to a halt in front of the doors to another station. Beads of sweat were forming on my forehead as I burst through the Men’s room door. The first stall was a mess. It was full and overflowing. I dared not step inside. Stall number two was better, but there was no toilet paper in the holder. Suddenly I spied a piece of a roll tucked at the back of the porcelain throne. Then, Ahhhhh. Sweet relief.

Now we are back in the car flying down the road hoping to find the Jesus Saves van again.

It may be true what they say about keeping your eyes upon Jesus. I took my eyes off him for a few minutes and he was gone. But if we hadn’t found that restroom when we did there would have been a tragic end to this story.

Instead, we are on the road again - following in the path of the Jesus Saves van.
