Happy New Year

Betsy Could Hear Me

I just saw a blurb from our local news station stating that American Girl will release a hearing impaired doll in 2020.

Finally, after all these years I feel vindicated! I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!

All those years ago, I told my folks that the Betsy Wetsy doll I got from Santa could hear me. I knew she couldn’t really talk so I talked for her, but I just knew she could hear me.

Now the American Girl doll company just confirmed what I believed all along; dolls can hear.

However, I can see a couple problems with what they are about to do.

First; kids will be screaming at their dolls. Of course those little dolls will just be giving them a blank stare. They won’t understand a word the kids are saying. Sad, come to think of it.

Second; will all children beginning in 2020 have to learn sign language? I wonder.

Third; Will the dolls have to wear little tiny hearing aids? My father wore them and I remember when the batteries started losing power they would make an awful screeching noise. Perhaps American Girl and EverReady are in cahoots. The big plan may be to sell more batteries.

I’m sure glad Betsy could hear me when I was a kid. There were times my brothers wouldn’t listen or play with me.

Too bad she couldn’t talk or yell. If she could have, she would probably have screamed her head off when whoever it was that kidnapped her and took her away from me after I took her to church one Sunday a long time ago.

I still suspect it was one of my older brothers or my father. But I could never prove it. I think they were jealous. Over sixty years have passed since I last saw her. Nowadays, it is I who has trouble hearing. Perhaps I should look into getting hearing aids.

Poor Betsy. Gone but not forgotten.

It’s now 2020. Time for another chapter and new beginnings. Can you hear me?
