Hello In There

Most folks are aware that John Prine passed away nearly a year ago. Many of you have heard his songs before.

His song about Meulenberg County’s Green River and the Paradise steam plant hit close to home because they aren’t far from where I live. There are others that touch something deep within me as well. He was a gifted writer and musician.

Today my granddaughter and her boyfriend dropped by to see us. How many teenagers think about doing something like that? Dropping by to check on their grandparents.

They were here at least a couple hours and we cherished every minute. It made us feel special.

We stay home a lot these days. It’s the curse of Covid. Everyone is being careful. In case anyone is wondering, they are, too. Virtual school. Wearing mask. Mingling only with those who have been isolating.

After they left, I did a lot of contemplating on their visit. That was when I remembered another of John Prine’s songs. Hello In There.

It’s a song about a couple who have grown old together. They’re lost in thoughts and old memories. Somewhat isolated. Then someone drops by to check on them. It made me realize how crazy and mixed up this past year has been. It also reminded me that we are a little older and there are people concerned enough to drop by and check on us.

I suppose we have arrived at another station along life’s railroad track into the future.

Attached is a link to John Prine’s song I mentioned. I hope you enjoy it. After listening to it you may want to pay someone a visit and say, "Hello in there”.
