Gilbert Lee10 Hutchens (Vercie (Versie) Jane9 Allgood, Leander Grant (Lee)8, John William7, Henry Robert6, William (Pikey) Henry5, William John4, Edward3, William2, Edward1 Algood) was born in Morganton, Burke Co., NC December 26, 1916. Gilbert died August 28, 2007 in Winston-Salem, Forsyth Co., NC. Obit: Mr. Gilbert Lee Hutchens, 90, a former town commissioner and merchant in Yadkinville, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Sticht Center. Gilbert was the eldest son of Harrison and Versie Allgood Hutchens. He served the town of Yadkinville as a commissioner in the 1940s and the 1970s. He also served on the town' s zoning board and was instrumental in bringing Bates Nightwear to Yadkinville in the 1960s. He was president of the first Planning Board for Yadkin County in 1976. Gilbert and his first wife, Lena, operated the Eagle Cafe and Grocery on Main Street from 1939 to 1972, when they retired. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Yadkinville. Gilbert was predeceased by his parents; three sisters, Ruth Holcomb, Gladys Weatherman and Lillian Hutchens; and a brother, Buck Hutchens. Gilbert was married for 53 years to his first wife, Lena Weatherman Hutchens; and almost 10 years to his second wife, Mildred Brown Hutchens, both now deceased. He is survived by two sons, Jerry Hutchens of Waxhaw and John Hutchens and wife [Janet] and granddaughter, [Emma Ingram], all of Yadkinville. He is also survived by two sisters, Joyce Dinkins of Yadkinville and Betty Thompson of Rocky Mount; as well as a brother, Wallace Hutchens of Yadkinville; and several nieces and nephews. The family will greet friends at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. in Gentry Family Chapel. Burial will follow in Center Memorial Cemetery of Center United Methodist Church in Yadkinville. The family requests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Yadkinville; the Yadkin County Public Library; the Yadkin County Senior Center; or to a charity of the donor' s choice. These organizations all added joy and dimension to Gilbert' s life. The family would like to extend our special thanks to the staff at both Willowbrook Health Care Center and the Palliative Care Unit of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for their conscientious care and helping to make Gilbert' s last days comfortable and peaceful. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the Hutchens family.

He married twice. He married Lena W. Weatherman 1937. Lena was born 1918. Lena died February 8, 1990.
