Dwight died December 22, 2004 in Johnston, IA. Dwight "Harold" Mateer, 77, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, Dec. 22,. at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. His funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, the Rev. Casey Cain of St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Burial: Wymore Cemetery north of Rose Hill. Visiting hours are open today at the funeral chapel, and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday. The family will greet visitors from noon until service time Tuesday. Memorials: Mahaska Hospice or Mercy Hospice in Johnston, or a charity of the donor's choice. Harold was born Nov. 14, 1927, in Oskaloosa to Dwight Harold Mateer Sr. and Inez Irene Awtry Mateer. He was a 1947 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. He ran the Oskaloosa J & M Beverage Co. for many years, and had the Star Mail Route from Albia to Marshalltown and return. He retired from Maytag in Newton in 1988, after 23 years of service. He married Bomell Phillips of Tracy on Aug. 6, 1949. They were later divorced. When his health was good, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as NASCAR racing. He is survived by his sons and a daughter-in-law: Dwight Harold Mateer III and Sandra Mateer of Ankeny, and Ronald Perry Mateer of Des Moines; a sister, Lucille Lorence of Oskaloosa; two grandchildren: Michael and Molly Mateer of Des Moines; a niece, two nephews and a spouse: Joanne Lorence and John Otto of Atlantic, Jim and Lynn Lorence of Ankeny, and Jon and Tanya Lorence of Houston, Texas; and his caregivers at Pleasant Park. He was preceded in death by his parents.
