Robert died November 6, 1999 in Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC. OBIT: Robert Lee Saunders, 46, 5 Pine Tree Road, died Monday (Nov. 8, 1999)at his home.
Born May 20, 1953, in Salisbury, Mr. Saunders was the son of Spencer W. and Annie Maie Chandler Saunders of Salisbury. He was a 1971 graduate of Boyden High School and a 1975 graduate of Wake Forest University, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Mr. Saunders graduated cum laude in 1978 from Wake Forest School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review staff. He has practiced law in Salisbury since 1978.
A member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, he was a Sunday school teacher, a lay Eucharist minister and a delegate to the Episcopal diocesan convention.
Mr. Saunders was chairman of the Republican Party and a member of the founding board of Hospice of Rowan County and the board of directors of Waterworks Visual Art Center. A community adviser to Total Care Health Services, he served on the board of Carolina Legal Services and was a founding member and past chairman of the Rowan Lutheran Education Association of Salisbury Academy. He was also a member of the Rowan County Planning Board, the Salisbury Parks and Recreation board and the Greenway Committee.
He was a member of the N.C. Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the American Trial Lawyers Association, the N.C. Academy of Trial Lawyers, the N.C. Savings and Loan League, the N.C. Association of Long Term Care Facilities and the Fidelity Bank board (formerly First Citizens Bank and Trust). He also served on the state bar’s Positive Action for Lawyers committee and the steering committee for the Lawyers Assistance Program.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Kimberly Weller Detty Saunders; sons Samuel Aaron and Stephen Holman Saunders, both of the home; daughter Charlotte Chandler Saunders, of the home; and brother Spencer William Saunders Jr., Richmond, Va.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. John Southern, interim pastor, and the Rev. C. Roger Butler, Episcopal chaplain. Burial, City Memorial Park.
Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.
