Donald died September 10, 2006 in Springfield, Greene Co., MO. Obit: Donald Brent Slack, son of the late Herbert and Louise Evans Slack, was born March 9, 1934, in Buffalo, Mo., and passed away Sept. 10, 2006, surrounded by his family, at Cox South Hospital, after a short battle with cancer. Don is survived by his wife, Maryetta Fowler Slack, son Mike, daughter Jill, and grandson, Matthew, who was the light of his life, all of Springfield; and sister, Darlene Brooks of Roswell, N.M. Don enlisted in the Army in 1954, and served as a radar instructor at Ft. Monmouth, N.J. In 1956, he transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he worked alongside RCA technicians installing one of the first closed-circuit television stations, which was a pioneer project used for medical training at Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Hospital. A 1952 graduate of Buffalo High School, Don earned his Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Industrial Education and his Master's degree in Education Administration, both at SMS. In 1967 Don began a career with Springfield Public Schools as an electronics instructor at Graff Vo-Tech. He was a pioneer instructor at Ozarks Technical Community College, and retired in July 2000 as chair of the industrial division. Visitation will be 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. A celebration of Don's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Central Christian Church, burial following in Missouri Veterans Cemetery. Don's family wishes to send our gratitude to the fabulous, caring staff of 5-West at Cox South Hospital.
He married Mary Etta Fowler Deember 18,1955. Mary was born Jfanuary 4,1938 in Tunas, MO. Mary was the daughter of Homer Fowler and Blanche Darby. Mary died July 2,2018 in Springfield, Greene Co., MO.
