Glen died June 9, 2003 in Las Cruces, Dona Ana Co., NM. OBIT: Glenn D. Daves, 87, a noted New Mexico educator, died on June 9, 2003 in Truth or Consequences. Mr. Daves served as a teacher, principal and superintendent in New Mexico public schools of Union (Thomason, Otto, Seneca, Mansker, Sofia, Clapham), Harding (Roy), Guadalupe (Santa Rosa), Otero (Weed, Mescalero, Tularosa) and Roosevelt (Floyd) counties. He also served two terms as Union County Superintendent of Schools. Mr. Daves began his career as an educator at the Thomason School in Union County at age 18 after only six weeks of college education. His last position was as the superintendent of the Tularosa Public Schools from which he retired. A notable achievement of Mr. Daves was the dramatic improvement in the educational persistence rates for students from the Mescalero Apache Reservation. In a four-year period under his leadership the number of students from the reservation attending high school in Tularosa, increased from eight to more than two hundred fifty. Mr. Daves graduated from Clayton High School and received BA (1939) and MA (1956) degrees from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas. In addition to his career as an educator, Mr. Daves farmed and ranched in Union County for many years. During World War II, Mr. Daves worked for Douglas Aircraft Corporation in Santa Monica, California. Mr. Daves was an active Democrat, serving as Sierra County Democratic Chairman during the 1980's. Glenn Doyle Daves was born on September 8, 1915, in Union County, son of Jesse James and Vada (Rockett) Daves. He married Edna Lee (Billye) Parker on February 9,1935 in Raton; they were parents to six children. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Elmer Joe Daves and Wallace Ray Daves; one son, Thomas Earl Daves; and one grandson, Thomas Allen Daves. He is survived by two sisters, Eloise Dellinger of Clayton and Lorene Grob of Raton; a daughter, Shirley Jean and husband, Daryl Bohl of Truth or Consequences; a daughter-in-law, Paula Daves of Magdalena; and four sons, Glenn Doyle Daves, Jr. and wife, Pamela of Las Vegas, Jessie Richard and wife, Mona Daves of Truth or Consequences; Gary Laurence and wife, Georgia Daves of Bosque Farms and Michael Monroe and wife, Maryanne Daves of Las Cruces. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held in the Chapel of French Mortuary (TorC) on Thursday (June12) from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and services will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church on Friday, June 13, 2003 with Rev. Ann Madden officiating. His grandsons will serve as Casket Bearers and Interment will follow in the Vista Memory Gardens Cemetery.
He married Edna Lee (Billye) Parker February 9, 1935 in Raton, Colfax Co., NM. Edna was born February 17, 1919 in Hereford, Deaf Smith Co., TX. Edna died February 3, 1998 in Truth or Consequences, Sierra Co., NM.
