Diedrich died March 29,2000. OBIT: Diedrich Waldan Payne, 83, of 5514 Oak Valley Road died Wednesday, March 29, 2000. A native of Franklin County, Mr. Payne was a son of the late Clarence Sr. and Bernice McDuffie Payne. He was retired from Coats and Clark and had worked with Standard Oil for many years. He was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Glad Tidings Assembly of God with the Revs. Fred Kendrick, Reginald Pressley and Watson Rumsey officiating. Burial will be in Stephens Memorial Gardens. Survivors include his wife, Sarah Gunnels Payne; a daughter, Bobbie Jean Merck, Toccoa; a brother, Clarence Norman Payne Jr., Toccoa; two grandsons; and three great-grandsons. Pallbearers will be John Merck, Dan Merck, Marlan Merck, Mark Wallace, Jay Hawkins, Harold Hanley, Jim Sapp and Steve Payne. The family is at the residence and will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today and from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Whitlock Mortuary.
He married Sarah Dean Gunnels. Sarah was born August 14,1917 in Carnesville, Franklin Co., GA. Sarah was the daughter of Garnet Wright Gunnels and Alberta B. Collins. Sarah died April 19, 2014 in Toccoa, Stephens Co., GA. OBIT: Mrs. Sarah Gunnels Payne DIED: April 19, 2014 LOCATION: Toccoa, Georgia Mrs. Sarah Gunnels Payne, age 96, of Toccoa, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Home Sweet Home Personal Care Home. Born August 4, 1917 in Carnesville, GA, she was a daughter of the late Garnet and Alberta Collins Gunnels. she was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God and was retired from Coats and Clark with 30 years of service. Mrs. Payne loved serving her Lord, her family and her grandchildren. Family members include her daughter, Bobbie Jean Merck; grandsons and their spouses, Dan and Lori Merck and John and Tracey Merck; great-grandchildren, Marlan Merck, Jonathan and Brittany Merck, Andrew Merck, and a great great granddaughter Sarah Kaylie Merck. She was preceded in death by her husband, Diedrich Waldan Payne.
