He married Viva Elsie Morris July 14, 1916 in Sipe Springs, Comanche Co., TX. Ernest and Viva were married in the Methodist Church at Sipe Springs by Rev. Sam Gilmore.

Viva was born September 13, 1895. Viva died March 19, 1985 in Kirkland, Yavapai Co., AZ. Ernest was 12 years old when his family moved to Comanche Co. TX. Here A. J. was considered a farmer.
