Sam died May 3, 2010 in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, LA. OBIT: Sam Allgood Jr., a resident of Mandeville, died Monday in New Orleans. He was 83. The cause of death was due to complications from a stroke. Mr. Allgood was born on May 15, 1926, in Voth, Texas, and raised in Lake Charles. He served in the Navy during World War II and enrolled at LSU following the war. Mr. Allgood received a bachelor's degree in education from LSU and was a proud member of the 1950 LSU national championship boxing team. After graduating from LSU, he married Bettie Jane Meador, of Clarksville, Ind., and went on to teach and coach boxing at Plaquemine High School. In 1956, he went to work in the oilfield services industry, and eventually rose to become president of Tidewater Marine Inc. in New Orleans. He retired from Tidewater Marine in 1982. Mr. Allgood was a strong supporter of LSU and served as chairman of the board of directors of the LSU Foundation. He also was an avid golfer and served as president of Metairie Country Club. Mr. Allgood is survived by his spouse, Joyce Deutchmann Allgood; son, Sam Allgood III, of Baton Rouge; daughters, Lynette Allgood McMillen, of Folsom, Holly Allgood Wolfert, of Greensboro, Ga., and Becky Allgood Swindell, of Dallas; sister, Mary Janet Allgood Hartman; and nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam S. Allgood Sr. and Minvera Iles Allgood, who were of Lake Charles; his first wife, Bettie Meador Allgood; and his brothers, Glenn Allgood, who was of Baton Rouge, and Frank Allgood, who was of Jennings. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 6, at 11 a.m. at St. Timothy's United Methodist Church in Mandeville. Visitation at the church will begin at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorial donations to the LSU Foundation's Forever LSU Campaign or St. Timothy's United Methodist Church, Mandeville.

He married twice. He married Bettie Jane Meador 1951. Bettie was born November 15, 1926. Bettie was the daughter of Magdalena Rohleder Meador and Clerance N. (___). Bettie died June 28, 2005 in Mandeville, Saint Tammany Parish, LA. OBIT:Bettie Allgood passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 after a long battle with a rare disease called Micro Bacobacterium Avium Intracellulare Complex. Mrs. Allgood was an active member in her church, St. Timothy United Methodist Church. She was also an activist for the Methodist Children’s Home in New Orleans. In the past, Mrs. Allgood served as President of the Beau Chene Garden Club, President of the Woman’s Health Foundation of St. Tammany Parish, and Chairman of the Missions Committee at St. Timothy United Methodist Church. Mrs. Allgood was a member of “The Daughters of the American Revolution”. She was also honored with being the first civilian to christen a Naval vessel when she christened LST 81 with the US Navy. She also christened a Tidewater Marine Services vessel the Verret Tide. Mrs. Allgood was one of the founding volunteers at the Lakeview Regional Medical Center. She also served as a driving force in the initial gift shop at the hospital. She also started her own business in Metairie called “The Candle Cottage”. She always had a gift of business, finesse, and understanding people. When she and her husband, Sam, moved to the Northshore, she closed the shop and became an active member of the community here.

Mrs. Allgood was born in Kentucky and raised in Indiana. She was the daughter of the late Magdalena Rohleder Meador and Clerance N. Meador. Her two brothers were the late Noel Meador from Indiana and the late Bob Meador from Baton Rouge, who was her twin. She came to LSU in Baton Rouge at the urging of her twin brother Bob, who was at LSU on an athletic scholarship. He introduced her to a man that would become her husband of almost 55 years, Sam S. Allgood, Jr. of Lake Charles, who was at LSU on a boxing scholarship. Through her love of genealogy, she has traced her heritage back to Chief Powhatten, a relative of Pocahantas.

Mrs. Allgood is survived by her husband, Sam S. Allgood, Jr.; her three daughters, Lynette A. McMillen of Mandeville, Holly A. Wolfert of New York, and Rebecca A. Swindell of Dallas, TX; her only son, Sam S. Allgood, III of Baton Rouge; and nine grandchildren, Brian L. Brothers of Slidell, Maggie W. Brady and Paul L. Wolfert both of Illinois, Jennifer, Kyle and Brett Bordelon of Baton Rouge, and Elizabeth, Sam S. Allgood, IV and Carson Allgood also of Baton Rouge.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 o’clock PM on Thursday, June 30th with a memorial service following at 2:00 PM. at St Timothy United Methodist Church in Mandeville. E. J. Fielding Funeral Home, Inc. 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington, LA in charge of arrangements.
