The farm was part of the "Hoots Settlement" of families descended from Jacob Hoots, Sr. and the land was part of Jacob's original land grants. Marshall died in a farm accident when his tractor overturned on him.

He married Ila Mae Melton. Ila was born August 12, 1910. Ila died July 19, 2001 in Yadkinville, Yadkin Co., NC. He married Nancy Adeline (Addie) Hoots January 19, 1904 in Yadkin Co., NC. Nancy was born January 1, 1880 in Yadkin Co., NC. Nancy was the daughter of Isaac Winfield Hoots and Sarah Catherine Wishon. Nancy died August 26, 1938 in Yadkinville, Yadkin Co., NC. Nancy is buried at Deep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Yadkin Co., NC Listed in the 1930 census as M. T. Joyner, Liberty, Yadkin Co., NC
