Samuel was the son of Francis Amstead Garner and Mary Jane May. Samuel died August 5, 1965 in Winston Salem, Forsyth Co., NC. Samuel was buried in the Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery, Winston Salem, NC From "The Descendants of Jacob Hoots," by Carl Casper Hoots: "Samuel W. and Ila Jane moved to Crutchfield about 1912 where he owned and operated a general merchandise store. He was there in 1916 when the big flood of the Yadkin River almost washed his store away. They moved to Winston-Salem about 1920 and he operated the Yellow Cab Company. Later his son, T. W. Garner, founded the T. W. Garner Food Corp. which proved to be very successful in a short time despite the great depression of the 1930s. It is now a nationally known but still family owned business. One of their first products was his mother's....blackberry jelly."

He was President of the American Accounting Association and became dean of the Business Administration School at the University of Alabama. He was listed in "Who's Who in America."
