James died October 29, 2008 in Leedey, Dewey Co., OK. OBIT: The funeral for James Eugene Blackketter, 83, of Leedey, will be 10:30 a.m today, Nov. 1, 2008, at Red Star Brethren in Christ Church, Leedey. Burial will be in Red Star Cemetery. Arrangements are by Shaw Funeral Home, Leedey.
He was born Jan. 17, 1925, in Bacca County, Colo., to Koert C. and Nellie Studebaker Blackketter and died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at his home.
He attended high school at Jabbok. He served in the Navy during World War II, doing submarine duty. After the war, he attended Oklahoma A&M. He married Ruth Heisey in 1953. They made their home in Red Star. In early years he taught agriculture and science in Jabbok, then was a rancher and farmer. He was a member of Red Star Brethren in Christ Church, serving as deacon many years and a delegate to regional and annual church conferences. He served on Roger Mills County Fair Board, County Farm Bureau, 41 years on Northfork Electric Cooperative Board and 34 years on Western Farmers Board, serving terms as president on both boards. He helped form Red Star Water District. He was honored as Good Neighbor of the Year by OK Rural Electric Association, and received the WKY Farmer/ Rancher of the Month Award. He was inducted into the Western Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1993.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth of the home; two daughters, Iris Blackketter of Little Canada, Minn., and Ariel Lohberger of Allison, Texas; three sons, Lynn and Lyle, both of Leedey and Loy of Marion, Kan.; two brothers, Don Blackketter of Shamrock, Texas, and Lewis Blackketter of McLemores-ville, Tenn.; one sister, Betty Noel of Abilene, Kan; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters.
