He married Annie Ccatherine Baxter June 17, 1903. Annie was born September 14, 1882 in Moxksville, Davidson Co., NC. Annie was the daughter of Robert O Baxter and Laura J. Shinn. Annie died November 2, 1961 in Concord, Cabarrus Co., NC. Annie was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery, Cabarrus Co., NC At the time of his father's death, Will Shelton, then age 12, gave up his childhood to work on a farm far enough away from home that he had to stay there at night. On Saturdays he returned home to bring his mother the fifty cents that he had earned that week (10 cents a day from dawn to dark). Mary Laura used it to buy such things that the family needed that she couldn`t grow, can or make such as a needle and tread for sewing, sugar, corn meal and flour. She made their clothes. They had a cow and a garden and she said that they ate a lot of cobblers and had milk.
