Opal Bell, vaudevillian and former WSB-Radio singer. Opal Johnson Bell loved to entertain her two daughters with stories of her days singing with vaudeville shows along the Eastern Seaboard. As a young girl, she and her two sisters, Evelyn and Winston Johnson, were known as the Calico Kids or the Johnson Sisters and sang with many well-known orchestras such as the Paul Whiting Orchestra during the late 1920's and early 30's. She has a scrapbook filled with fan letters praising the beautiful harmony of the trio. They also sang between movie showing at the Fox Theater accompanied by Bob Van Camp on the organ, and she remembered seeing on one occasion a young cartoonist named Walt Disney drawing pictures between shows. Being the youngest of the three girls, she recalled sitting on a stool to reach the microphone during their weekly Saturday morning radio program on WSB-Radio. After her sisters retired, many times she sang as soloist at George Tech dances in the Egyptian ballroom at the Fox. Music was always an important part of her life even after she retired. For many years she sang in the choir at the Baptist Tabernacle in Atlanta, later at Calvary Baptist Church in Forest Park, and continued singing in the choir at First Baptist of Forest Park until she became ill last year. She stopped singing professionally to become a fulltime wife, mother, and homemaker. She loved her two daughters and especially enjoyed "fixing" their hair and looking after them. Usually wearing bright colors, Opal took great pride in looking her best. Her hair and make up always looked perfect, and she looked much younger that her 81 years. Nurses in the hospital constantly told her how pretty she looked and how pretty her skin was. For the past several years she was an active member of the Believers Sunday School class at First Baptist of Forest Park and enjoyed it so much. Survivors include her husband, Harold Bell, daughters, Pam Whitley of Riverdale and Sheila Bennett of Fayetteville; sister Winston Pelham, Conyers; grandchildren Chris, Chad, and Craig Whitley, Alan and Sherry Bennett, and great-grandchildren, Adam and Alyssa Bennett and Jacob Bennett. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 12 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Parkway Garden Chapel, 1000 Forest Parkway, Forest Park. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2:00 at Parkway Garden Chapel.
