22594 i. Robert Garland (BobO)9 Gill was born in Baskenville, Meclenberg Co., VA 1922. Robert died February 9, 2014 in South Hill, Mecklenburg Co., VA. OBIT: GILL, Robert Garland "Bob," 91, born in South Hill, Va., entered eternal life February 9, 2014. He is survived by his wife and love of his life, Erna Herz Gill; brother, Kennith Gill (Dorothy Davis); granddaughter, Starrene Foster (Jeff Herndon); two nieces, Sharon Gill Harbaugh (Wayne) and Susan Gill Weiss (Arthur); nephew, Steven Gill; and great-granddaughter, Grace Herndon. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Master Sergeant after over 20 years of active service. During his service career, Master Sergeant Gill served in India, Japan, Korea and Germany. A veteran of WWII and the Korean War, he received many prestigious medals and recognitions during his enlistment, including the Good Conduct Medal, Defense Service Medal, Campaign Medal, Asiatic- Pacific Campaign Medal (with 3 Bronze Service Stars), WWII Victory Medal, Japan Occupation Medal, Germany Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal (with 2 Bronze Service Stars), Air Force Longevity Service Award (with 4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters) and the UN Service Medal. After his retirement from the Air Force, he was employed at the Defense General Supply Center as a value engineer for over two decades. During his retirement years, he worked part-time at Tom Brown Hardware, where he adored working with the staff and helping customers. He was an avid model airplane builder and collector and enjoyed many years of flying his treasures with friends. He was very skilled at woodworking and spent much time building a variety of beautiful things every day. Those who knew Bob, knew him as a gentle and caring man that greeted everybody with a smile. He was a very devoted husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed.
