Alton died March 22, 2013 in Phenix City, Russell Co., AL. OBIT: Alton Otis Newsome, 93 of Phenix City, Alabama passed away Friday, March 22, 2013 at his home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 25, 2013 in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 3770 Hwy 431/280W, Phenix City, AL with Rev. Junior White officiating. Burial will follow in Newsome Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5pm until 7pm at the funeral home. Serving as pall bearers will be Jason Newsome, Bryan Taylor, Mark Taylor, David Smith, Larry Williams and Joe Barber. Mr. Newsome was born May 1, 1919 in Phenix City, Alabama. He is the son of the late Alton O. Newsome, Sr. and Ruby McCollum Newsome. Mr. Newsome served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during WWII and was retired from NABISCO after 37 years of service and retired from Bill Heard Chevrolet after 15 years of service. He was a member and deacon of Woodland Baptist Church. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Berta Mae Cobb Newsome and brothers and sisters, Richard, Ralph, Ruth, Jessie, Ruby and Mary. He married Berta Mae Cobb December 23, 1944 in Phenix City, Russell Co., AL. Berta was born June 3, 1922 in Phenix City, Russell Co., AL. Berta was the daughter of George Edward Cobb and Katie Stewart. Berta died March 10, 2011 in Phenix City, Russell Co., AL. OBIT: Berta Mae Newsome, 88 of Phenix City, AL passed away Thursday, March, 10, 2011 at her home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 3770 Hwy 431 N., Phenix City, AL with Rev. Bobby Watford officiating. Interment will follow in Newsome Cemetery. Serving as pall bearers are her grandsons, Jason Newsome, Bryan Taylor, Mark Taylor, nephew, Garry Cobb, brother-in-law, Dan Newsome and friend, Bobby Barbee. The family will receive friends Friday (today) from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Mrs. Newsome was born June 3, 1922 in Grant, AL daughter of the late George Edward and Katie Stewart Cobb. She was retired after 29 years of service from Ladonia Elementary School. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Felton Cobb, James Cobb, Ralph Cobb and Marion L. Cobb. Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Alton Newsome of Phenix City, AL, children, Barry Newsome and wife Patty of Uchee Community, AL, Bruce Newsome of Hatchechubbee, AL, Deborah Taylor and husband Larry of Smiths Station, AL, three grandsons, Mark Taylor, Bryan Taylor and wife Elizabeth, Jason Newsome and wife Dawn, two great grandchildren, Shelby Newsome, Abbie Taylor, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
