David died June 17, 2010 in Phenix City, Russell Co., AL. OBIT: David C. Newsome, 77, of Society Hill, AL died Monday, June 14, 2010 at East Alabama Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. EDT (10:00 a.m. CDT) in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 3770 Hwy. 431 N., Phenix City, AL 36867, with Rev. Mark Carlock officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. EDT( 5-7 p.m. CDT) at the funeral home. Mr. Newsome was born November 1, 1932 in Lee County, AL, son of the late Robert C. and Anna Harris Newsome. He was a member of Society Hill Baptist Church, retired steam fitter Union Local 52, Montgomery, AL and served his country honorably in U.S. Army. Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Sue Layfield Newsome. Survivors include his son, David Glen Newsome and his wife, Linda of Richmond Hill, GA, daughter, Janet Newsome Carlock and her husband, Mark of Opelika, AL, sisters, Mary Evans and husband Kenny of Otasco, IN, Willie M. Doherty of Phenix City, AL, sister-in-law, Betty Newsome of Ft. Mitchell, AL, seven grandchildren, Heather and husband Dale, Shane and wife Audrey, Whitney, Amanda, Emilee, Hunter, Kaci, four great grandchildren, Savanna, Aaron, Joey and Shelby, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He married Mary Sue Layfield January 27, 1954 in Phenix City, Russell Co., AL. Mary was born October 23, 1931 in Phenix City, Russell Co., AL. Mary was the daughter of Nicholas Layfield and Georgia Curlee. Mary died April 15, 2007 in Phenix City, Russell Co., AL. Obit: Mary Sue Newsome October 23, 1931 - April 15, 2007 SOCIETY HILL, AL— Mrs. Mary Sue Newsome, 75, of Society Hill, AL passed away Sunday April 15, 2007 at East Alabama Medical Center. Funeral Services will be held 2pm Wednesday, April 18, 2007 in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Phenix City with burial to follow in Lakeview Memory Gardens according to Striffler-Hamby Phenix City Chapel. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 until 8pm at the funeral home. Mrs Newsome was born October 23, 1931 in Lee County, Alabama to the late Julius Nichlos and Mary Curlee Layfield. She had been employed with Sunshine Biscuit Company and Dolly Madison for many years and spent her last years as a homemaker. She was a member of Society Hill Baptist Church and the Society Hill Ladies Club and was an avid Atlanta Braves and Auburn football fan. Mrs Newsome is survived by her husband of 53 years, David Carter Newsome of Society Hill, AL., her son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Linda Newsome of Richmond Hill, GA and her daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Mark Carlock of Opelika, AL. She is the loving grandmother of Heather Robinson and husband Dale, Shane Newsome and Audrey, Whitney Watley, Amanda Chapman, Emilee Newsome, Hunter Pennington and Kaci Carlock, one great grandchild, Savanna Watley.
