Mary died October 5, 1988 in Winston-Salem, Forsyth Co., NC. Herman left his home in Yadkin County at an early age and was employed by R. J. Reynolds Company for a short time before he was employed by Standard Oil Company as Plant Superintendant. After retiring he formed a partnership with his brother, Ezra, by the name of Hoots Motor Company. After retiring for the second time, he worked for The Old Salem Foundation Preservation Society
