He married Elva Nevada Shermer December 22, 1937 in Morganton, Burke Co., NC. Elva was born January 16, 1914 in Morganton, Burke Co., NC. Elva was the daughter of Edward Daniel Shermer and Sarah Shore. Elva died May 17, 2003 in Yadkinville, Yadkin Co., NC. OBIT: Mrs. Elva Nevada Shermer Hoots, 89, of Yadkinville died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at the Yadkin Nursing Center. Mrs. Hoots was born Jan. 16, 1914, in Yadkin County to Edward Daniel and Sarah Shore Shermer. She was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College at the age of 17. At Appalachian, Elva was on the swim team. Upon graduation, she taught at West Yadkin High School and coached the girls basketball team. Mrs. Hoots then taught at Yadkinville High School, then taught at Forbush High School from 1967 until her retirement. In her 34 years of teaching, Mrs. Hoots was a well-respected and excellent teacher of mathematics, and touched the lives of many of her students, becoming a friend and confidant to many of them. During World War II, Mrs. Hoots worked as an engineer at Glen L. Martin Aircraft on the Flying Wing, while her husband, Carl, served in the armed forces. She was a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Deep Creek Baptist Church and was Past Matron ! of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 233 in Yadkinville. Mrs. Hoots was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 60 years, Carl Casper Hoots; two sisters, Gladys S. Todd and Inez S. Colvard; and two brothers, Simon Shermer and Page Shermer. Surviving are her son; Dan Hoots and his wife, Debby, of Yadkinville; a grandson, Brant Snow Hoots, of Yadkinville; and a sister, Louisa S. Todd, of Yadkinville. The funeral service for Mrs. Hoots will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, May 19, at Deep Creek Baptist Church by Dr. Ron Davis and the Order of the Eastern Star No. 233 Yadkinville Chapter. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Hoots will lie in state from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Deep Creek Baptist Church and the Hoots family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Deep Creek Baptist Church General Fund. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is assisting the Hoots family.
