Virginia died January 23, 2007 in Winston Salem, Forsyth Co., NC. OBIT: Mrs. Virginia Garner Sherrill, 92, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at Salemtowne, her home for the past 12 years. She was born in Crutchfield, Surry County, on February 3, 1914, the daughter of Samuel W. and Ila Jane Hoots Garner. The family moved to Forsyth County when Virginia was a child and she spent the rest of her life in Winston-Salem. She graduated from Mineral Springs High School and Salem College, with majors in mathematics and history. She was a teacher at Gray High School until 1944 and returned to teaching in the early 1960’s when Dalton Junior High School opened. She taught mathematics at Dalton until she retired in 1976. She grew up as a member of First Baptist Church and joined Ardmore Moravian Church when she married Franklin Woodford Sherrill in 1941. She enjoyed being a docent at Reynolda House and was a member of the Old North State Chapter of the DAR. While her health allowed, she enjoyed traveling to Europe, England, China, Japan, and throughout the United States. Her husband, her parents, and her brothers Paul, Thad, Harold and Ralph predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Sherrill Stroupe and husband Steve of Libertyville, Illinois; her son Franklin Sherrill, Jr. and wife Nancy of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Christopher Stroupe of Dartmouth, NH; Beth Stroupe of Newton, MA; Kelley Sherrill Kirkman and husband Steve of Winston-Salem; Wood Sherrill and wife Katie of Kalispell, Montana; and Brad Sherrill and wife Ali of Charlotte, NC; great-grandchild Grayson Kirkman of Winston-Salem; sisters Elizabeth Garner McKinney of Hampton, VA and Margaret May Garner of Winston-Salem; sister-in-law Alice Turner Garner of Winston-Salem and many nieces and nephews. After a private burial in Forsyth Memorial Park, Rev. Kevin Frack of Ardmore Moravian Church and Rev. Linda Brown, Chaplin at Salemtowne, will conduct a memorial service in the Smith Saal at Salemtowne, 11:00am on Friday, January 26. The family will receive friends after the service at Salemtowne. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, 27103; Salemtowne Residents’ Financial Assistance Fund; or a charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank the many care givers in Health Care at Salemtowne for their care and kindness given throughout the years.

She married Franklin Woodford Sherrill June 14, 1941 in Forsyth Co., NC. Franklin was born November 30, 1913. Franklin died January 1977 in Winston Salem, Forsyth Co., NC.
