Berdell died March 15, 2005 in Hartford, Madison Co., IL. Obit: Berdell E. McCann, a longtime community leader in Hartford, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, from complications of pneumonia at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was 89 and lived in Hartford.
Mr. McCann was born in Nebo, Ill., but when he was an infant his family moved to Edwardsville Junction, now known as Hartford, and lived in a tent. Mr. McCann left school after the ninth grade to start working to help support his family.
After being introduced through family members, Mr. Cann married Dorothy Zumwalt of Nebo in 1937. She died in 1989.
Mr. McCann served a year in the Army after being drafted in 1945.
Mr. McCann started working as a laborer for Clark Oil refinery in the early 1950s. Over the years, he worked in many positions, but after receiving additional training from Southern Illinois University in Alton, he was named director of the safety department. Mr. Cann retired in 1981.
Since the 1950s, Mr. McCann was active in Hartford affairs, being elected clerk, treasurer and trustee. Only two years ago, he was called out of retirement to fill a vacancy on the village board.
Mr. McCann was a member of the East Maple Street Chapel in Hartford. He also served as an instructor for Junior Achievement and Boy Scouts of America.
Mr. McCann began playing the guitar, harmonica and fiddle at age 9. In 1951, he wrote "Go To Jesus For Rest," which is now in the East Maple Street Chapel hymn book. The song was sung at his funeral.
Among survivors are a son, Jerry McCann of Dorsey; two daughters, Carla McCann of Hartford and Diana Kelley of Cottage Hills; two brothers, Basil McCann of Pittsfield and William McCann of Fosterburg; two sisters, Maureen Boren of Pittsfield and Juanita Boren of Nebo; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral was Friday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River. Burial was in Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens in Bethalto.

He married Dorothy Elizabeth Zumwalt 1937. Dorothy was born September 28, 1917. Dorothy died July 19, 1989 in Hartford, Madison Co., IL.
