Robert died June 27, 2016 in McComb, Pike Co., MS. OBIT: Services for Mr. Robert Eugene Smith, Jr. will be held on Friday,
July 1, 2016 at 11:00am at Friendship Baptist Church with interment
in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 30, 2016
from 5:00-8:00pm at Riverwood and will resume at the church an hour
prior to the service.
Mr. Robert Eugene Smith, Jr. 84, of Brookhaven went to be with his Lord
and Savior, Jesus Christ on June 27, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.
Robert Jr. was born in his family home in Lincoln County on August 28, 1931
to Robert Eugene Smith, Sr. and Katie Lou Calcote Smith.
He was a graduate of West Lincoln High School and went on to attend
Mississippi State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in
Agriculture. While he was at Mississippi State, he married the love of his life,
Elaine, on August 19, 1951. He was also a member of the ROTC and upon his
graduation, he was called into active duty through the United States Army as a
Second Lieutenant. Robert began his service at Fort Benning, Georgia and finished
at Fort Jackson, South Carolina boasting a rank as Captain. While he was in the Army,
he earned many marksman medals and was a much respected company commander
of the 101st Airborn Division.
When Robert was discharged from the Army, he moved back home to Brookhaven
with his family and worked for the United States Department of Agriculture where
he retired after 42 years of service.
Mr. Smith was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church, where he served as a
deacon, discipleship training director, and a member of many classes throughout the years.
He along with his loving wife, Elaine, and best friends Rev. Wiley and Mrs. Katie Reid served
with Church Building Ministries Inc.; allowing them to travel all over the United States.
He greatly enjoyed helping others any way he could.
Gardening was a way of life for Robert and Elaine. They enjoyed sharing their harvests
with their families and friends, always being sure everyone was taken care of. Earning
a title of grandfather was something he was very proud of. He and Elaine loved their
grandchildren and great grandchildren very much. It was evident to anyone who knew them.
Robert Eugene Smith, Jr. above all loved the Lord. When he closed his eyes for the last
time here on this Earth, he opened them in Heaven; reunited with Elaine, his wife of 64 years.
Mr. Robert is already greatly missed but we will always cherish the many memories and the
lessons learned from a Godly Man.
Preceding him in death was his wife, Elaine; his parents, Robert, Sr. and Katie Smith; sisters,
Allene Hunsucker, Janie Pearl Smith and one stillborn son along with a daughter-in-law,
Janet Keen Smith.
Those left to cherish his memory are sons, Robert Wayne Smith and wife Nancy and
Mark Eugene Smith, Sr. and wife Patricia; one daughter, Nancy Elaine Campo and
husband Mark; sister, Katie Ruth Alford and husband Hollis; along with 11 grandchildren,
Kelly Taylor and husband David, Mandy Warren and husband Michael, Elaina Anders
and husband Lane, Katie Jarancik, Ian Smith and wife Brandi, Mark Smith, Jr. and wife Lennye,
Joshua Campo and wife Fallon, Jacob Campo, Josh Reno and wife Kayla Beth,
Russ McNees and wife Kate and Jenny Byars and husband Dustin. He is also
survived by 21 great-grandchildren.
He married Elaine A. Smith August 19, 1951. Elaine was born May 28,1933 in Franklin Co., MS. Elaine was the daughter of Felix Smith and Lois Wroten. Elaine died April 14, 2016 in Brookhaven, Lincoln Co., MS. OBIT: Mrs. Elaine A. Smith, 82, of Brookhaven, went to be with her Lord on April 14, 2016. She died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Smith was born on May 28, 1933 in Franklin County, Mississippi. She was a homemaker who opened her heart and home to the young and old, relatives and friends, to enjoy her southern hospitality.
Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will take place at Friendship Baptist Church on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 19, at Riverwood Family Funeral Service and will resume Wednesday at Friendship from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service.
She was preceded in death by her parents Felix and Lois Smith; her brothers, Tom Smith, Truly Smith, Wesley Smith; and daughter in law, Janet K. Smith.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 64 years, Robert E. Smith, Jr.; sons, Robert Wayne Smith and wife Nancy, Mark Eugene Smith, Sr. and wife Patricia; daughter, Nancy Smith Campo and husband Mark; 11 grandchildren, Kelly Taylor and husband David, Ian Smith and wife Brandi, Mandy Warren and husband Michael, Elaina Anders and husband Lane, Katie Jarancik, Mark Smith, Jr. and wife Lennye, Joshua Campo and wife Fallon, Jacob Campo, Josh Reno and wife Kayla Beth, Russ McNees and wife Kate, Jenny Byars and husband Dustin; and 21 great grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Murlyn Smith.
Robert Eugene Smith JR and Elaine A. Smith had the following children:
