He married three times. He married Edith Shell. Edith was born September 13, 1922. Edith died September 6, 2003 in La Crosse, Mecklenburg Co., VA. OBIT: Mrs. Edith Shell Carter, age 80 of La Crosse, died Saturday September 6, 2003 in a Richmond Hospital. She was a retired cook at Wilson Brothers Barbecue. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou Tolbert of La Crosse; two sons, James H. “Junior” Carter of South Hill and Ronnie D. Carter of Tidewater; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted Monday at 2:00 P. M. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at the funeral home.
He married Elizabeth Mae Vaughan May 17,1963 in Dinwiddie Co., VA. Elizabeth was born June 30,1932 in Petersburg, Dinwiddie Co., VA. Elizabeth is the daughter of Linwood Adoulphus Vaughan and Gladys Ivy. He married Alice Spencer Glover Ellis July 12,1974 in Richmond Co., VA. Alice was born March 15,1931. Alice is the daughter of John Woodson Glover and Lucy Hooper Agee.
James Henry Carter and Edith Shell had the following children:
