OBIT: Funeral services for Joseph Paul “Joe” Bray, 83, of Bethune will be held Sunday, April 5, 2009 at 2:00 p. m. at Timrod Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery Rev. Dave Robinson will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 4, 2009 from 6:00—7:30 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to Timrod Baptist Church, 4227 Timrod Road, Bethune, SC 29009. Mr. Bray died Friday, April 3, 2009. Born in Yadkinville, NC., he was the son of the late Joseph Paul Bray and Gladys Allgood Bray. He was a retired teacher and administrator for Gordon College, Barnesville, Georgia. He received his B.A. and Masters Degrees in English from Appalachian State University, Boone, NC. He was a US Navy WWII veteran and was a radio operator on an amphibious ship having earned four Battle Stars for duty in New Guinea and participating in invasions in the Phillipine Islands and Okinawa. Mr. Bray also served in Korea, China and Japan. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Barnesville, GA., a former Rotarian, served on two congressional educational and service academies appointment committees for Newt Gingrich. Mr. Bray was a former member of the Barnesville Zoning Appeals Board, past chairman of the Barnesville Housing Authority and a former member of the Bethune Lions Club.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Baker Bray, 2 daughters, Kasandra Price and her husband Eddie of Leesville, SC and Sabrina Bray (Billy Minoughan) of Rembert, SC.; 2 grandchildren, Tiffany Gardner, and John-Paul Smith and his wife Gayle; great-grandson, Wyatt C. Smith; brother, Byron Bray, of New York City, sister, Ann Thomas and her husband Donald of Matthews, NC., 5 nieces and 4 nephews, brother-in-law, Charlie Baker and his wife Bonnie; sister-in-law, Joanne Stratton and her husband Dick. He was predeceased by a grandson Christopher Gardner.

He married twice.
