Algood Genealogy

2743. Dorothy Lee7 McGuire (California (Callie) Florence6 Allgood, Clay Dean5, Varney Edward4, Edward3, William2 Algood, Edward1 Allgood) was born in Pacific Junction, Mills Co., IA August 10, 1905. Dorothy died January 30, 2009 in Templeton, San Luis Obispo Co., CA. OBIT: Dorothy Lee McGuire Jensen, 103, passed away peacefully at her home on Jan. 30, 2009. Her age is especially notable in that she entered this world as a premature 3.5-pound baby, born at home in the little railroad town of Pacific Junction, western Iowa. The doctor told her parents, John and California McGuire, that she likely would not live until morning. Dorothy, however, not only survived the circumstances of her birth but also overcame the numerous childhood illnesses that life inflicted upon her.

At the age of 6, Dorothy entered Pacific Junction Public School as a first-grader. One year later, her father, a railroad switchman, moved his family to Council Bluffs, Iowa, the fifth largest rail center in the nation. (Although we can’t vouch for it, there are those who would argue that it’s more than a coincidence that her railroadman father, John McGuire, shares a name in common with the then-notorious railroad “union” called the “Molly McGuires.”) Dorothy was proud to be related to Col. John C. Fremont.

Dorothy completed her public schooling at Abraham Lincoln High School, where she excelled at track, winning virtually every competition she entered. After high school, Dorothy attended business school for one year which prepared her for her first job as a stenographer to an oil broker.

In 1926, Dorothy married her high school sweetheart, George H. Jensen, a union that was to last 65 years, produce three loving children and take them from Council Bluffs to California (Montrose, Culver City, Venice, Yucaipa and then to their son’s vineyard in San Miguel, where she remained for seven years after her husband’s death). When her son retired and sold the vineyard, Dorothy made one last move in her long life, to her son’s home in Templeton where she would spend her last 10 years.

Dorothy was a devoted wife, loving mother and homemaker, not uncommon during her lifetime. However, she also committed time to participating in the PTA at her children’s schools and, later, serving for a number of years as a member of the Women’s Club of Venice where, among other positions, she distinguished herself as president.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1991. She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis and husband Milton Fernandez of Glendale and grandchildren Margaret Elkins, Katherine Panaqua, Christina Fernandez and John Fernandez; son George H. Jensen, Jr. and wife Pamela and granddaughter Kirsten Jensen; and daughter Carol Jensen and granddaughters Jane and husband Joe Hettich, Sarah and husband Robert Stevens and Elizabeth and husband Ian Harac; and 10 great-grandchildren; as well as her devoted careprovider and friend Helen “Rose” Subia.

A service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Chapel, 1703 Spring St. in Paso Robles. Interment will follow at the San Miguel Cemetery.
