33013. Dennis Lee10 Baker (Martha Jean9 Allgood, Leslie John8, John A.7, Edmond (Edward)6, Phillip5, Edmund4, Edward3, William2 Algood, Edward1 Allgood) was born in Michigan City, La Porte Co., IN February 25, 1940. Dennis died February 15, 2013 in West Linn, OR. OBIT: Dennis Lee Baker passed away quietly at his home in West Linn, Oregon on Feb. 15th, 2013. This was following a short battle with Pancreatic Cancer. He was 72 years old. He was born Feb. 25th, 1940 in Michigan City, Indiana to Walter and Martha (Allgood) Baker. He is the second of six children. He is survived by his siblings: Dick; Gary who is married to Annette; Bob; his sister, Pam; and baby brother Bruce and Bruce’s wife Thalia. Denny proudly served as a U.S. Marine Corporal in the Barstow, CA First Battalion. Awards include the USMC Good Conduct Medal. His last separation from active duty was in 1961. In 1962 Dennis joined the Portland Police Department. He served in several divisions, including Detective. On May 3, 1990 following 28 years of service, he retired. Retirement didn’t last for long, as Denny took a job with Internal Affairs for the Oregon Department of Corrections. After leaving in 1994 he joined PGE as their Security Investigator. He did this until 1998, when he and wife, Lauri moved to Orchard Park, New York. It was Lauri’s job with Fisher Price that took them back East. Not one to sit idle, Den found the perfect solution working at the local Arthur’s Hardware Store. He loved that job and like all the others, he was good at it. In 2000, after 2 years, they packed up and moved back to Oregon, where all of their children lived. Denny took a position with Comcast as the Head of Security in 2001, until his resignation in 2008. One might think that he would finally settle down and enjoy his retirement, but a call for volunteers to sign up with the Portland Cold Case Unit in 2010 was too good to resist. His was the first call they received. Always one to keep his mind active, he enjoyed the challenge of solving old cases, which he did. This was to be his last and final job. On September 25th, 2012 Denny was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. While there still is no cure, researchers are working on treatments for the disease. Dennis tried a couple of these experimental chemotherapies with the hope that useful information would be obtained in the fight to cure cancer. While neither was successful in winning his battle, important data was obtained. After 5 ½ months, Denny went to be with our Lord. He was a faithful Christian man and knew that his death was just an end to his life on this earth. He enjoyed many hobbies including photography, watching and feeding birds, gardening, cooking, reading, traveling, and being outdoors. He was quick to lend a hand to others. More than anything, he loved his family and looked forward to the many sporting events, dance recitals, music recitals, school plays, graduations…… the list goes on. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Lauri. They were just days short of celebrating their 43rd Anniversary. He was a great Father to 5 children and 17 wonderful grandchildren: Kelly and her husband Brad and their children Jen and her husband Ben, Jess, Katie, Andrew and Joe; Karri and her children Max, Samantha and Nick; Tim and his wife Cheryl and their son Ryan; Tom and his wife Lisa and their children Gabrielle, Sophia, Olivia and Luke; Todd and his wife Shannon and their children Ella, Peyton and Drew. We loved him and he will forever be in our hearts. The Steens Mountain in Oregon’s beautiful high desert will be the final resting place for Dennis’s ashes.
