6584. Edna Mae7 Allgood (Fines Alvin6, Manley H.5, Manley H.4, John3, Ishmael2, Edward1) was born in Thackerville, OK April 1, 1914. Edna died October 23, 2011 in Brownwood, Brown Co., TX. OBIT: Edna May Allgood Word Sparkman, age 97, of Brownwood died Sunday morning, Oct. 23, 2011, at the Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel, with Bro. David Pate officiating. Burial will follow in the Eastlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

She was born on April 1, 1914, in Thackerville, Okla., the daughter of the late Fines A. and Ila Dunn Allgood, one of 11 children. She grew up in Brown County in the communities of Salt Creek, May and Jenkins Spring. Her family went to the Plains to pick cotton and while there she met and later was married to Clyde Word in Mexico on Aug. 11, 1932.

They moved several times living in the West Texas communities of Sanderson, Sonora, Ozona, and Barnhart, moving back to the Brownwood area from 1947-1953. They then moved to Fort Stockton where they lived until moving to Lake Brownwood in 1970 and later to Brownwood in 1990. Her and Clyde celebrated over 50 years of marriage. Following his death, she was married to Sparky Sparkman who also preceded her in death.

While in Fort Stockton, she was a very active member of her church and served on the hosting committee. She was also a member of the Countryside club and served as a state delegate for the Home Demonstration Club. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of May at the time of her death.

She is survived by two daughters, Dottie Sue Layman of Brownwood and Ila May Swinney and husband Eugene of Brownwood; brother, Eual (Bud) Allgood and wife Jewel of Brownwood; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; a son, Clyde Elmer Word; and nine brothers and sisters, Curtis, Aubrey, Otis, Eula, Veda, Vera, Irene and two infant twins.

She married three times. She married Clyde Melburn Word August 11, 1932 in Mexico. Clyde was born February 22, 1911. Clyde died February 15, 1991 in Brownwood, Brown Co., TX. She married Charles D Wright June 5, 1993 in Brown Co., TX. Charles was born June 3, 1923 in Mills Co., TX. Charles died November 4, 1994 in Brownwood, Brown Co., TX. She married Robert Glenn (Sparky) Sparkman May 12, 2003 in May, Brown Co., TX. Edna May (Allgood) Word of Brownwood, formerly of Fort Stockton, and Robert Glen "Sparky" Sparkman, retired Lt. Col., U.S. Air Force, were united in marriage at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, 2003, at the First Baptist Church parsonage in May with the Rev. Dennis Hester officiating.

Robert was born May 21, 1917 in Minden, TX. Robert was the son of Walter G. Sparkman and Ola Guthrie. Robert died April 24, 2009 in Brownwood, Brown Co., TX. OBIT: Funeral services for Robert Glenn (Sparky) Sparkman, age 91, of Brownwood, will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 27, 2009 in the First Baptist Church of May with David Pate and Dennis Hester officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Wolf Valley Cemetery under the direction of Davis - Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m.

Mr. Sparkman died Friday, April 24, 2009 in Brownwood.

He was born on May 21, 1917 in Minden, Texas to Walter G. and Ola Guthrie Sparkman. Sparky attended Desdemona schools and graduated from Freer High School in 1937. He graduated from Howard Payne College in 1941 and Baylor University with his Masters in 1952. Sparky married Joe Mae Lester on April 17, 1942 in Las Vegas. She died in 1999. He later married Edna Allgood Word on June 12, 2003 in May.

Sparky served his country as a pilot in the US Army Air Corp in World War II. He taught school for several years in Sidney, Boerne and Freer before being called back into active duty with the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He served at many installations around the country as an instructor. He had accumulated many flight hours in C-45s, B-17s, and B-29s. Sparky retired from the Air Force in 1969 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He went back to teaching and also worked for the Texas Employment Commission.

Sparky was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of May where he served as a deacon and song leader.

He owned a ranch northeast of May and also owned Sparkman Oil Company.

Sparky is survived by his wife Edna of Brownwood, two daughters, Pamela Mansfield and husband Tom of Batavia, Illinois and Candy Mitchell and husband David of Whitt, and a son Phillip Sparkman and wife Sue of Houston; nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; two step-daughters, Ila Swinney and husband Eugene of Lake Brownwood and Dottie Layman of Brownwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, and six brothers.
