James died July 24, 2002 in Phenix City, Russell Co., AL. James Bernis Newsome, 88, of Phenix City, Ala., died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at his home.
Born Dec. 29, 1913, one of 14 children of John Francis Christian Newsome and Sarah Jane Newsome.
Mr. Newsome was a machinist by trade and had worked in an engineering and production role at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant from 1954 to 1963.
He then moved to Winter Garden, Fla., but still maintained a home in Phenix City.
Mr. Newsome is survived by three daughters, Roberta Newsome and Rachel Lanier and her husband, Sidney, all of Oak Ridge, and Brenda Parsons and her husband, Joe, of Ebro, Fla.; his brother and sister, Rufus Newsome and Beth Hand, both of Phenix City; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Della Lee Newsome, and 11 brothers and sisters.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City.
Burial will follow at Riverdale Cemetery in Columbus, Ga.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, July 26, at the funeral home.
He married four times. He married Katrina Nair Hatchell. He married Lozelle Lenoir June 12, 1937 in Russell Co., AL. Lozelle was born May 29, 1923. Lozelle was the daughter of S. A. Lenoir and Minnie Lee Stewart. Lozelle died December 8, 1995 in Moxksville, Davidson Co., NC. He married Della Lee Newman Wood October 31, 1942 in Girard, Russell Co., AL. Della and James were married at the Central Baptist Church, Girard, AL
Della was born May 29, 1906. Della died February 13, 1958. Della was first buried at Lakeview Memory Gardens and later moved to Riderdale Cemetery.
He married Mattie Lou (Kitty) Stewart Everitte June 3, 1972. Mattie was born October 10, 1922.
