OBIT: Services for Melba Lee Smith Sykes, of Brookhaven, are 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8 at Central Baptist Church with burial in Union Baptist Church Cemetery in the East Lincoln community. _
Visitation is Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Brookhaven Funeral Home and again Wednesday from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home and 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Mrs. Sykes, 79, died Feb. 4, 2006, at King's Daughters Medical Center. She was born in Lincoln County on Nov. 24, 1926, to Henry L. Smith and Mary Ann Smith Scott. She was a homemaker and lifelong resident of Lincoln County. She was a member of Central Baptist Church. Preceding her in death were her parents; her sister, Mildred Smith Sykes, of Brookhaven; and a brother, Whitney Smith, of Woodward, Okla. Survivors are her husband of 61 years, Paul Milton Sykes, of Brookhaven; her sons and daughters-in-law, Henry and Gloria Sykes, of Kenner, La., Gary and Joyce Sykes, of Bogue Chitto, Frankie and Tina Sykes, of Brookhaven, Johnny and Donna Sykes, of Wynne, Ark., Paul Michael and Donnie Sykes, of Bogue Chitto, and Randy Sykes and Melody, of Brookhaven; her daughters and sons-in-law, Frances and Johnny Newell, of Brookhaven, Dorothy Taylor, of Gainesville, Ga., Patsy Thornton, of Marietta, Ga., and Mary and Mike Guess, of Baton Rouge, La.; her brother, Henry "Junior" Smith, of Stilwell, Okla.; her sister, Cleo Smith Case, of Brookhaven; her sisters-in-law, Johnnie Smith, Maggie Smith, Evone Hewitt, Martha Ann Sykes and Dorothy Sykes; her brother-in-law, Leroy Hewitt; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
She married Paul Milton Sykes 1945. Paul was born March 1, 1925 in Lincoln Co., MS. Paul was the son of John H. Sykes and Mamie Rials. Paul died September 24, 2008 in Brookhaven, Lincoln Co., MS. OBIT: Services for Paul Melton Sykes, of Brookhaven, are 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Central Baptist Church with burial in Union Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Ryan Thurman and the Rev. Hal Hatten will officiate.
Visitation is Friday from 5 until 9 p.m. at Brookhaven Funeral Home on North Jackson Street and Saturday from 9 until 11 a.m. at the church.
Mr. Sykes, 83, died Sept. 24, 2008, at King's Daughters Medical Center in Brookhaven. He was born in Lincoln County on March 1, 1925, to John H. Sykes and Mamie Rials Sykes.
He was a captain for the Brookhaven Fire Department for 46 years and six weeks. He was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Melba Lee Smith Sykes; and his eight brothers and sisters.
Survivors are his sons, Paul Michael Sykes and wife, Donnie Kay, of Bogue Chitto, Henry Sykes and wife, Gloria, of Kenner, La., Gary Sykes, of Bogue Chitto, Frankie Sykes and wife, Tina, and Randy Sykes, all of Brookhaven, and Johnny Sykes and wife, Donna, of Florence; his daughters, Frances Newell and husband, Johnny, of Brookhaven, Dorothy McMath and husband, George, of Gainesville, Ga., Patsy Thornton, of Marietta, Ga., and Mary Guess and husband, Mike, of Brookhaven; a sister, Evon Hewitt, of Brookhaven; his 21 grandchildren; his 18 great-grandchildren; and his two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Captain Billy Beeson, Captain Ray Allen, Inspector Andrea Spiller, Captain Donald Sterling, Captain Scotty Smith and Shift Captain Darrel Davis.
Melba Lee Smith and Paul Milton Sykes had the following children:
