Wessie died June 17, 2015 in Brookhaven, Lincoln Co., MS. OBIT: Wessie Walker Newell, 87, of Brookhaven, MS, passed from this life on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at Haven Hall Health Care Center in Brookhaven, MS. Mrs. Newell was born January 11, 1928 in Lincoln County, MS to John Butler and Mattie Walker Smith.
Visitation will be at Brookhaven Funeral Home (Natchez Drive) on Thursday, June 18, 2015 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and will continue at Brookhaven Funeral Home on Friday, June 19, 2015 from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM. The graveside service will follow in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Brookhaven Funeral Home (Natchez Drive) is in charge of the arrangements.
She was a retired seamstress from Stahl Urban in Brookhaven, MS. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Butler and Mattie Walker Smith; husbands, Mart Walker and Russell Newell; and sister, Jewel Smith Foster.
Survivors are her daughter, Gale Walker White and husband David of Brookhaven, MS; son, Jackie Bruce Walker and wife Dale of Columbus, MS; grandchildren, Laurie Walker Godfrey and husband Doug, Stacey Walker Rowe and husband Jay, Lacey Walker Pressgrove and husband Jed, Joseph Darron White and wife Angie, and Brad White and wife Josette; 8 great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
Pallbearers are Darron White, Brad White, Terry Carlisle, Brent Carlisle, Landon White and Seth White.
Honorary pallbearers are Roger Foster and Wayne Foster.
She married twice. She married Martin Henry Walker December 15, 1945 in Lincoln Co., MS. Martin was born April 18, 1915 in Brookhaven, Lincoln Co., MS. Martin was the son of Ollie Walker and Minnie Mae Britt. Martin died Decembe 20, 1971. Martin was buried in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Lincoln Co., MS.
She married Russell Edward Newell March 2, 1979 in Lincoln Co., MS. OBIT: Services for Russell E. Newell of Brookhaven are 2 p.m., Thursday, June 13, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is today from 5-10 p.m. at Brookhaven Funeral Home. Mr. Newell, 86, died June 11, 2002, at Country Brook Living Center. He was born in Lincoln County on Sept. 6, 1915, to A. C. Newell Sr. and Haley Newell Newell. He was a retired heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Marguerite Walker Newell; two grandchildren and five sisters. Survivors are his wife, Wessie S. Newell of Brookhaven; his son, Jerome Newell of Lawrence County; his stepson, Jackie Walker of Columbus; his daughters, Peggy Rutland of Lawrence County and Earline Allen of Wesson; his stepdaughter, Gail White of Brookhaven; his brother, A. C. Newell of Brookhaven; his sister, Ruby Lee Britt of Brookhaven; and eight grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
Russell was born September 6, 1915 in Lincoln Co., MS. Russell was the son of Abram Caldwell Newell and Haley Jane Newell. Russell died June 11, 2002.
Wessie Smith and Martin Henry Walker had the following children:
